Start a Business in Quilling Art...
what is quilling?
Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewellery, mobiles etc.The most popular and versatile technique is that of rolling. The paper strip is rolled in fingers or using a tool. The coil is then released and then glued at the tip and then shaped. These shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental patterns.
How to start quilling art?
In the 18th century, quilling became popular in Europe where gentle ladies of quality ("ladies of leisure") practiced the art. It was one of the few things ladies could do that was thought not too taxing for their minds or gentle dispositions. Quilling also spread to the Americas and there are a few examples from Colonial times. Many quilled art works can be found on cabinets and stands, cribbage boards, ladies' purses, a wide range of both pictures and frames, work baskets, tea caddies, coats of arms and wine coasters. Storage boxes, larger than most jewelry boxes with drawers and/or tops that opened, quilled lock boxes, and much more. Some items were specially designed for quilling with recessed surfaces. Quilling was also combined or married with other techniques such as embroidery and painting.

Secrets To Quilling Success-
"Why Learn Paper Quilling?"
7 Tips for the Paper Quilling
Beginner
Paper quilling, also known as paper filigree,
is the art of shaping paper into intricate and interesting shapes. This is
achieved by rolling strips of paper and pinching or curving them into various
forms. A completed quilled project may look complicated, but the basics of the
craft are actually not hard to master. If you have ever wanted to give paper
quilling a try, here are seven tips for getting started!
1. Quilling paper
Paper quilling starts with rolling paper strips, and so
naturally, the No. 1 item on the supplies list is quilling paper. You can buy
packs of pre-cut quilling paper in most major art and crafts stores, but you
can also cut your own strips of papers. The length and size of the paper will
determine how the paper quilled project eventually looks.
2. Tools
In order to paper quill, a needle-like tool
is required. A slotted tool is usually recommended to the paper quilling
beginner because it is easier to roll paper with it. However, the slotted tool
tends to crease the paper strips. Those who are more experienced in paper
quilling may prefer the needle tool. Even though it is slightly more tricky to
use, many crafters prefer the needle tool as it tends to result in a neater,
crease-less paper roll.
3. Basic shapes
The most basic shape of paper quilling is the
rolled paper coil. By pinching and adjusting the tension of the paper coil,
different quilled shapes are made. Some of the most basic paper quilling shapes
are shown in the picture above.
4. A simple card idea
Once
you have practiced and are happy with your paper quilled shapes, it’s time to
make something with them! You don’t need a lot of shapes to make something fun
with paper quilling. Even the simplest of the quilled shapes can be used for a
project. For example, in the card pictured above, five simple loose coils were
used for the monkey’s juggling balls to make a fun greeting card.
5. Other creative applications
Paper quilling is frequently used for making greeting cards or in wall art, like decorative canvases or framed art. Some folks even make wearable art-like earrings out of their paper quilled shapes!
6. Resources
Paper quilling instructions and idea books can
be found in many book stores. Some paper quilling books that were written for
kids have great instructions that can be used for beginners of any ages. Even
though they were intended for a young audience, children’s paper quilling books
are not only easy to understand, they are usually filled with quick and easy
projects that are great for any beginner.
7. Practice,
practice, practice!
Paper quilling takes a lot of patience and a
lot of practice but the results can be very rewarding. The more you practice,
the better you will be at it.
Quilling Paper
Types
Quilling paper is available on the consumer market in over
250 colors and dimensions. It can be divided into various categories, like
solid colored Quilling paper, graduated Quilling paper, two-tone Quilling
paper, acid free Quilling paper and other assorted parcels of Quilling paper.
It is available in various dimensions, such as 1/8”, ¼” and 3/8 broad paper
parcels.
Acid-Free Quilling paper
As the name clearly indicates this is a paper that is
completely acid free. The quality makes it an outstanding choice for making
scrapbooks, rubber stamping, and creating frames for pictures. It assures your
project will last a lifetime, without any side effects on the framed picture or
album.
Graduated Quilling Papers
This type of paper provides an exceptional look to
decorative quilling projects. The edges have a solid color that gradually fades
to white. When using a graduated paper, a quilling ring begins with a dark
shade but ends up being faded to a lighter side. On the contrary, some
graduated papers begin as white, or a lighter shade, and then slowly fades into
a solid, darker color.
Two-Tone Quilling Papers
This is another important type of quilling paper. It is
quite similar to the graduated quilling paper in its use. The look consists of
a concrete color on one side and comparatively lighter color on the other side.
With two-tone paper the color remains same, however the intensity of color is different.
The main use of this quilling paper is to provide a desired level of softness
to the quilled subject. It possesses the capacity to quill many papers in a
single spiral.
