What Is Barcode?
Barcode is the small image of parallel lines (bars) and spaces that is machine readable representation of information in a visual format and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies used to retail store items, identification cards, and postal mail to identify a particular product number, person, or location. The barcode uses a sequence of vertical bars and spaces to represent numbers and other symbols. A bar code symbol typically consists of five parts: a quiet zone, a start character, data characters (including an optional check character), a stop character, and another quiet zone.
Barcodes is an optical machine-readable representation of data that can easily readable by handheld scanner optical called barcode readers or barcode imager for 2D codes and transfer to computer via barcode software. The reader uses a laser beam that is sensitive to the reflections from the line and space thickness and variation. The reader translates the reflected light into digital data that is transferred to a computer for immediate action or storage.
The primary purpose of a bar code is to identify the product by labeling the item with a bar code containing a unique number or character string. Bar codes are typically used with a database application where the data encoded in the barcodes is used as an index to record in the database that contains detailed information about the item that is being scanned. Bar codes also provide, a quick and error free means to input the data into an application running on a computer. By using barcodes, the potential for errors from manual data input is eliminated.
Barcode symbology is the different barcode standards that are used for barcode generations and serves various users, industries, or other geographic needs. Some of the most common barcode standards used world-wide are Codabar, Code 128, Code 128 SET A, Code 128 SET B, Code 128 SET C, Code 39, Code-93, EAN-13, Code 39 Full ASCII, EAN 8, Industrial 2 of 5, Interleaved 2 of 5, ISBN-13, ITF-14, LOGMARS, MSI Plessey, Planet, Postnet, Standard 2 of 5, UCC/EAN-128, UPC-A, UPC-E, UPSC Stack Label, UPSC Tray Label, USS-93 and more than 26 barcode fonts.
Bar codes are developed or created by bar code generating software programs. They are printed using either a regular printer or a bar code printer, and they are read using a bar code scanner. Bar codes are commonly used in store checkout counters around the world and are regularly applied in the retail and food service industries. Learn the basics of bar codes to gain knowledge of this technology.
How to Understand Barcodes
Barcodes are a series of closely spaced vertical lines that combined with a series of numbers identify different products. Product barcodes are read by barcode readers to track inventory, ring up products that are purchased, scan coupons and even track packages through the mail system. Barcodes were developed to eliminate the human error that occurred when cashiers manually typed in prices and numbers. Barcode technology can seem intimidating to beginners, but it is actually very easy to read and interpret
Look at a recently purchased product, or go to a store, and locate the product's barcode. The barcode looks like vertical black lines on a white background. The barcode is usually placed on the product packaging and is clearly visible on the bottom or near the lower side of the packaging.
Examine the series of thin, black, vertical lines that make up the top portion of the barcode. Notice that some of the vertical lines are thicker than others and than some lines have more white space between them than others. These lines are graphical representations of the numbers that are located below them. Although the length of the lines on barcodes vary, this only serves to make the codes easier to read by barcode scanners.
Read the numbers that are arranged in a horizontal line at the bottom of the black lines of the barcode. Standard barcodes contain 12 numbers. The first number identifies the type of product the item is, such as retail, pharmaceutical, food. The next five digits identify the manufacturer of the product, and the five digits after that identify the actual product itself. The final number is simply there to ensure that the barcode reader read the barcode correctly. Each set of numbers is separated by a space.
Symbologies, or Bar code Types
Although there are many symbologies used to create bar codes, most symbologies produce symbols with several aspects in
common. This section is intended to give you a basic technical overview, of symbologies or bar code types so you can understand
the terminology when you decide to implement bar coding technology.
Bar code Contents
Bars and spaces are known as the “elements” of the bar code. They are grouped together to make “characters” that each represent a
number, letter, punctuation mark or other character. Bars must be dark enough so they do not reflect back a bar code readers light, while
the spaces within the bar code and the background around it must be clear and reflective enough to be distinguishable from the bars by
the bar code reading device.
The “density” of the bar code is the number of characters that can be represented per linear inch and is usually expressed in characters
per inch or CPI. The higher the density, the more information a bar code can represent within a given space.
Bar Code Format
Clear spaces, known as “quiet zones” or margins, are placed before and after the bar code symbol. These quiet zones ensure that only the complete bar code is read.
Start” and “Stop” characters or patterns indicate the beginning and end of the bar code symbol and sometimes even provide clues as to the direction the bar code is being read. “Bi-directional” bar codes can be read from either of two directions. Most bar codes are arranged in a “linear” format, a single row of bars and spaces that usually allows for bi-directional reading. These are often referred to as “one dimensional” bar codes. “Two-dimensional’ bar codes encode information in two directions and they require special readers. These bar codes come in two basic formats called “stacked” symbologies and “matrix” symbologies.
Check characters” or “check digits” are sometimes used to help determine that the correct information is read from a bar code. “Self checking” bar codes prevent a printing defect from causing similar characters to be substituted for each other.
Data” or “application” identifiers are sometimes used to indicate the general category or intended use of the information contained within
a bar code.
Symbologies that create “discrete” codes separate each character by spaces that carry no information. Discrete characters can be decoded independently and do not require the highest print quality standards. Symbologies that create “continuous” codes use every space within the bar code to carry information. Continuous codes can convey more information per inch than discrete codes but have slightly higher print quality requirements.
Bar codes are most often displayed “horizontally” and in this orientation are known as “Picket Fence” codes due to their resemblance to a picket fence. However they may also be displayed “vertically” and these are referred to as “Rotated” or “Ladder” codes due to their resemblance to the rungs of a ladder.
If you plan to use bar codes for internal use, select the bar code symbology that best suits your application. However, if your labels must satisfy customer or industry compliance standards, you must use the symbology designated by those standards.
